WHISPERS
of your
HEART
Inspired by the artist, David Hockney, and the book, How to Do Nothing, I made a study of the locations and landscapes presented in the movie, Whisper of the Heart. I channelled Hockney's style of instilling time, dimension and movement typical of cubism into the flat, still images of photographs. The aim is for you to slow down, pay attention and focus on each individual still to feel a sense of fluidity, motion and intrigue for the unique and magical places that create and accompany the simple yet beautiful plot.

In transit: In the movie, our main character, Shizuku Tsukishima, moves around a lot, from her home and her school, to the library and the antique shop. The train was her mode of transportation when she first made the journey to discover the Antique Shop, where her story begins. ----->
The Antique Shop: A place of mystery and wonder, the Antique Shop is filled with strange and beautiful knick-knacks from around the world. A central location in the movie, you can find it being hinted and portrayed from various vantage points throughout the whole movie. Here, Shizuku meets the mischievous but passionate Seiji Amasawa, his warm and encouraging grandfather Shiro Nishi, and his cat figurine, the Baron, all of which would push her to pursue her passion and talent in writing, and inspire her to write her first story. ------>
Setting: As Shizuku undergoes her adventures, we are experiencing suburban Tokyo in the summer sometimes during the 90s, and a taste of its cityscape. ------->
